The search applet, "Search.jar", which your visitors use, will only work in browsers supporting java 1.1 and higher (That means : Netscape Communicator 4.06 and above and Internet Explorer 4.0 and above!). The applet will not load if your visitor uses another browser (as far as I know). It might also run in the HotJava Browser - I haven't testet it.
The application "MakeSearch.class", which you use on your own system, will only run in an environment conforming to the Java 1.1 API. Click here to download the Java Runtime Enviroment 1.1.5 for Windows ("jre115-win32.zip" - 3.3 Mb)
DO NOT EVER EDIT THE "search.txt"-FILE MANUALLY - YOU WILL NEED TO REINSTALL!!!!
Send me a mail if you want a notification on the release of version 1.0 (that is, 1.0 without the "Preview" suffix!).
The package "PSearch.zip" includes full source files for the application
- improve if you like!
All programming by Ulrik Magnusson, November 1998. No Rights Reserved!!
First of all, you need to create a search file. Run the "psearch.bat" file to execute the "MakeSearch.class"- file.
You will see a window like this:
You use this tool to add, modify and delete entries from the search file.
Add an entry:
Enter a URL, starting with 'http://'. This must be the exact url.
- example:
http://194.234.39.114/Default.htm
Do NOT enter: http://194.234.39.114/ - it will not be accepted.
You can only add URLs ending on
".htm",".html",".doc" and "txt".
In the description field, add a title or description for the Page (max
65 characters!)
- example : Ulrik Magnusson's Web Site
Finally, enter some keywords for the page- they are not required, though. Example: home, main page
Now click the "add" button to add the entry. You will see that the URL has been added to the list.
Modify an entry:
Double-click the URL on the list which you want to modify. Now you see
the content of the entry.
Just modify whatever you want (except the URL!) and click the "add"
button. Now you will asked to
confirm that the entry will be replaced. Click "ok". The entry has
been modified.
If you modify the URL, a new entry will be created!
Delete an entry:
Double-click the URL on the list that you want to delete, click the "Delete"-button and confirm delete.
Note
The search applet will search through the entire entry - including the
URL!
I have created a hypertext document, you can use as the search-page
for your site - "searchpage.htm" - feel
free to edit the page.
The essential code in the document is the applet-code:
<CENTER><APPLET CODE='Search.class' ARCHIVE='Search.jar' WIDTH='508' HEIGHT='334'>Sorry, your Browser does not support Java 1.1,<BR>so you cannot use the applet on this page<BR>Click <A HREF=http://ip114.dkik.dk/Download/DownloadCenter.htm>here</A> to get the most recent version of <BR>Netscape Communicator!</APPLET></CENTER>"
You are on your own if you edit this!
In the Directory "C:\UMsoft\PSearch\" you will find 3 files you need to upload: "Search.jar", "search.txt" and "searchpage.htm". You will need to upload all of these to your site, and they must be placed in the same directory!
NB! "Search.jar" is the compressed applet.
On the 2nd time you upload, you only need to upload the "search.txt"
file!.
Go to the URL, where you placed the "searchpage.htm"
file. Now you should see the Applet appearing. If it doesn't
work, it is probably because you are trying to
test the applet locally. I do not not why, but it will refuse to load
the "seach.txt" file if you are not testing the
applet at its proper URL (I think it is some security restrictions which
deny
applets access to 3rd parties??).
Enter a keyword. The search applet will search through the entire entry
- meaning: BOTH the keywords, the title
AND the URL is searched for matches! I consider this a feature but
if you think it is a bug, please mailme
and I will
see what I can do.

Again, if you have problems using the product, please mail me at
[email protected],
and I will try to
help you. The newest info about the product can be found here
, where you can also find the newest
version of this manual. I hope you enjoy the product!
Be careful if you reinstall the files - your "search.txt" file will be deleted!
Run the "Uninstall.bat" in C:\UMSoft\PSearch. This will delete the directory
"C:\UMSoft\PSearch". If you have no other
UMsoft-programs on your computer, you can delete the directory "C:\UMSoft"
as well - you have to do this manually!
