Want your own search engine - here it is. PersonalSearch
allows you to create a search engine for you own site.You decide what keywords
it should respond to and what URLs are included in the engine. I use it
to let people search my site for keywords - but you could also provide
links to you favorite sites - so that e.g. a request for "Sun" responded
with a link to Sun Microsystem's site.
The search engine differs in several aspects from other of its kind: It does not use other search engines, it does not search whole html files for keywords and your visitors are not taken to another site to get the result (because it has no server side).It is self-contained with the benefit that you do not need to have your own server or use cgi-scripts. All you need to have in order to use it is a homepage. It also offers 100% control of the search abilities. This requires from you a little work: for every document you must specify location, title and keywords (keywords are not required). This information is stored in a file, which the applet reads from. The offer of 100% control requires from you that you control! This distribution includes a search applet to put on your web page and a Search Maker, which allows you to customize the engine, both are written in Java. It is designed mainly for Windows users. I have only provided setup files for Windows, but the class files will of course run on any operating system with a graphical user interface! Do not expect me to know about your problems if you are not running Windows! The distribution includes full source code as always - feel free to improve! The search applet will only work in browsers supporting java 1.1 and higher (That means : Netscape Communicator 4.06 and above and Internet Explorer 4.0 and above!).
